Notes

The butterfly is locally not rare in montane dense forests at low to moderate elevations (Alt. 50 - 1000m).
As mentioned on the Thaumantis diores diores page, the male genitalia are broadly divided into diores and hainana groups. The hainana group, as described by Lang (2010) and Monastyrskii (2011), is characterised by the crista of the male genitalia being strongly built as a finger-like projection. Populations with these characteristics are distributed from Guangxi to Hainan, and further afield into S.E. Thailand, S. Laos, Cambodia and central to south Vietnam.
Since Miyazaki et al. (2006), this population has been treated as ssp.splendens. In fact, the markings on the upperside are very similar to those of ssp.splendens and some are difficult to distinguish. However, as mentioned above, the male genitalia is quite different from that of ssp.splendens.
From the northern part of central to northern Vietnam, individuals with the same upperside markings as diores, but with genitalia intermediate between those of the hainana group, are occasionally found. It seems to be a transitional area between the two groups.
