Notes
As mentioned under Miletus mallus mallus, Miletus bannanus is considered to be conspecific with Miletus mallus based on its markings and genitalia.
However, due to its differences from the nominotypical subspecies in the following characteristics, it is treated here as a distinct subspecies.
♂ UnF: 1) The white markings are more pronounced; in particular, the upper part of space 1b is covered with white or greyish-brown scales for about half its length towards the base.
The area from spaces 2 to 1a is usually covered with greyish-white scales, particularly in the dry season form.
2) The dark area is relatively narrow, being less than half the size of those in the nominotypical subspecies.
The populations in Thailand and N. to C. Laos are similar and are also thought to belong to this taxon.
Furthermore, there is a tendency for individuals to be larger, particularly in N. Thailand.
The butterfly is locally common in montane forests at moderate elevations (Alt. 550 - 1000m).
In 2021, it was confirmed that both mallus and gethusus were found to occur in the same mountain in Chiang Mai, N. Thailand.
However, it has been observed that these two species exhibit habitat partitioning.
This species is found confined to broadleaf bamboo bushes in the forest, whereas Miletus gethusus prefers hilltops and forest edges.
Males are territorial on shrubs or undergrowth in forests from 12:30 to 16:00.
The male specimen shown in Ek-Amnuay ([2007],2012) as Miletus croton corus seems to be mallus and locality 'Koh Tarutao ; Khao Chong' is incorrect.
Hitherto neither croton nor mallus has been recorded from peninsular Thailand.
The records of Miletus croton from Laos appear to be this taxon.
Therefore, the presence of M. croton in Laos has not been confirmed.
