Notes
Zhang et al.,2022 treated this taxon as a distinct species on the basis of molecular analysis and morphology. The genitalia of populations from peninsular Thailand to the Malay Peninsula are highly variable, as noted by Eliot & Kirton,2000. Further taxonomic study is needed.
The specimen from Satun shown above was the first discovery in Thailand.
The butterfly is rare in lowland montane forests (Alt. 10 - 450m) and only a few specimens are known from Thailand. Males come to the banks of streams and puddles to suck water.
Pinratana,1985 recorded ssp.minuscula from Ranong, P.Thailand, but this is uncertain and may be Tapena bornea. Inoué & Kawazoé,1965b recorded this taxon from S.Vietnam. Tapena minuscula was recorded 50 km north of the area and these two taxa may be sympatric. Further distributional study is needed.
