Sugiyama (1994) treated the taxon Neope yama var. serica as a distinct species. Subsequently, Huang (2003: 96) treated Neope yama kinpingensis as a subspecies of serica.
The populations from Vietnam and Laos are rather variable and some of them appear to be intermediate between yama and serica. Further taxonomic studies of the relationship between yama and serica, including molecular analysis, are needed.
