The butterfly is locally common in montane forests at low to moderate elevations (Alt. 400 - 1300m).
Males often come to the banks of streams and puddles to suck water.
The populations from S.E. Myanmar (Mawlamyine), W. & N. Thailand, Laos and C. Vietnam tend to be larger in size, with a paler ground colour and lighter markings.
The type specimen of flavobrunnea is an extreme dry season form as mentioned by Adamson (1905).
Although Evans (1932) synonymised flavobrunnea with the nominotypical subspecies, I consider it to be a separate subspecies.
The Hainan population is tentatively included in this taxon but further taxonomic study is needed.
