Notes
The butterfly is locally very common in montane bamboo forests at moderate to high elevations (Alt. 700 - 1550m).
The taxon siamensis was described by Rothschild,1916 and the type locality was known only 'Siam'.
Then, For a long time, it was thought to be a S.E.Thailand population. However, an examination of the type specimen in the NHML,
I realized that the spear-shaped black markings on the UpF is not as well developed as in the S.E.Thailand population,
and that the N.Thailand population corresponds to this taxon because of its shape.
I consider the type locality most likely to be somewhere around Chiang Mai prov.
The populations from Phrae and the eastern side of Lampang, N.Thailand are slightly different, being highly variable and unstable.
In general, individuals from Chiang Rai to the western side of Lampang are similar to ssp.siamensis, but the ground color of the upper side is darker and occasionally individuals rather similar to ssp.mathilda occur.
It seems to be a transition to ssp.siamensis.
Further taxonomic and distributional studies, including DNA analysis, are needed.
