The butterfly is not uncommon in montane forest at low to moderate elevations (Alt. 30 - 550m).
Yago et al. (2012) identified ipona as a form of the nominotypical subspecies based on both morphology and molecular analysis.
However, in peninsular Thailand, only the ipona form is found in both males and females, and these are stable.
In the Malay Peninsula, individuals that are indistinguishable from the nominotypical subspecies seem to occur very rarely in mountainous areas.
It is possible that this is a regressed and relict form inhabiting mountainous areas, whereas ipona may be a population inhabiting mainly lowland areas.
The ratio of these forms to each other needs to be examined.
I tentatively treat the populations from P. Thailand to W. Malaysia as ssp.ipona.
Further taxonomic study is needed.
