The butterfly is locally common in montane forests at low to moderate elevations (Alt. 350 - 1100m).
The females from Chiang Mai, N. Thailand and Laos have a lighter and bluer ground colour on the upperside.
I assumed they were albopunctata, but I was wrong.
As mentioned on the democritus page, the type specimens of albopunctata from "Moulmein" [Mawlamyine, Myanmar] are unfortunately completely discoloured and their original colouration is not known.
Examination of the Myanmar specimens suggests that the nominotypical subspecies occurs south of the Mawlamyine and Dawna ranges.
Alternatively, it is possible that this area is a transitional zone for both subspecies.
Therefore, as in the past, I treat albopunctata as a synonym of democritus.
On the other hand, the populations from E. Pegu to the Karen Hills and Ataran are the same as those in N. Thailand and Laos.
I tentatively treat these populations as a separate subspecies.
There are other records from mainland Thailand, such as 'Eka Klo', W. Thailand, Uthai Thani and a photo from Chanthaburi, but the lack of specimens makes it unclear to which taxon they belong.
In addition, Vane-Wright & Gaonkar (2006) recorded Orissa to N.E. India as an isolated habitat for this species.
Further taxonomic and distributional studies are needed.
