This is a quite localized species, however it is not uncommon in its habitats. The butterfly is found in forests at moderate elevations (500 m a.s.l.). Morishita (1994) recorded this species from 'Doi Suthep', but the reliability of this record is questionable. The actual locality is likely to be Chiang Dao. Males are frequently observed mud-puddling along stream banks and at puddles.

The population from northern Thailand has relatively large black spots and indistinct submarginal markings on the UnF compared with those of other taxa. Huang (2026) described Tongeia amplifascia meifangae from Xishuangbanna, S. Yunnan, and included this population in the taxon. However, differences in wing markings suggest that this population represents at least a distinct population. As no corresponding species has been identified to date, this population is provisionally treated here as sp. incertae sedis. Further taxonomic and distributional studies are needed.
