Notes

The butterfly is very common in secondary and montane forests at low to moderate elevations (Alt. 30 - 1200m). Both sexes visit flowers and males occasionally come to the banks of streams and puddles to suck water. They often fly out from bushes along the trail and rest on the underside of leaves with their wings spread.

Zhang et al (2022:25) divided japetus into seven species. However, the number of taxa examined, especially those from continental regions, is inadequate, and there are also few differences in markings and male genitalia. They treated the Indian species as Tagiades ravi, Tagiades atticus atticus as the population of Thailand, and the population from W.Malaysia as Tagiades atticus balana. However, the type locality of atticus is considered to be W.Malaysia or peninsular Thailand. Furthermore, the type locality of balana is Borneo and is generally considered to be a Bornean subspecies. Thus, their treatment is rather questionable. I have therefore tentatively followed the traditional classification. Further taxonomic study is needed.
