New to Thailand.
The first discovery in Thailand is taken photo by Antonio Giudici on 21.July.2014 in Yala province.
The butterfly is not rare in montane forests at moderate elevations (Alt. 700 - 800m) and is frequently found at hilltops.
Godfrey (1930) recorded Mycalesis anaxias aemate in Khao Kalakiri, Pattani, which is possibly this taxon.
Further distributional research is needed.
The Malaysian subspecies of Mycalesis anaxias was given the name bisaltia by Fruhstorfer, based on a figure in Distant (1886), Rhopalocera Malayana.
Subsequently, Aoki & Uémura (1982), based on the fact that the type specimens of bisaltia in the NHML were assigned to "Assam" in Talbot ([1923]), gave the type locality of bisaltia as Assam and the Malaysian taxon as the new name senoi.
However, Fruhstorfer's original description clearly states that the type specimen (holotype) is a specimen illustrated in Distant, as follows;
"Die von Distant abgebildete Rasse der malayischen Halbinsel, bisaltia subsp. nov., mit der Type von Perak, schließt sich meinen Exemplaren von Assam an und letztere differieren wiederum von Sikkim-Stücken durch die kleinere Gestalt, dennoch aber breitere und mehr blau weiße Subapicalbinde der Vflgl...".
He also suggested that the Assam specimens were similar to bisaltia, and I assume that some of Fruhstorfer's Assam specimens in the BMNH also had the type label added.
Thus, Aoki & Uémura's treatment was incorrect.
The Malaysian subspecies should be bisaltia and senoi is a synonym of it.
