According to Callaghan (2009), there are specimens from Tam Dao and north of Hanoi that appear to be intermediate between ssp.echerius and ssp.paionea. Monastyrskii & Devyatkin (2015) restricted the distribution range of ssp.echerius to Lang Son and northern areas near the Chinese border. I tentatively follow them. Further taxonomic and distributional studies are needed.
