Notes
The butterfly is locally not rare in montane forest at moderate elevations (Alt. 550 - 1000m).
The classification of the three species, including mahadeva, eriphylae and merta, has been confusing from the past to the present.
The reason is the markings of each species are very similar, there is no difference in the male genitalia and they are all uncommon, making it difficult to collect specimens for comparison.
Nicéville (1895) described Euthalia binghamii based on a single male and five females from Tenasserim.
Moore (1898), in Lep. Indica, found the female type specimen of binghamii illustrated in the original description to be Euthalia merta.
The female type specimen was shown in Sheela et al. (2019) and was definitely confirmed to be merta.
Since then, the identity of the female of binghamii has been unknown.
In N. Thailand, from Chiang Mai to Mae Hong Son, only binghamii is found and eriphylae is never found.
Therefore I realized that the male and female in the photos above, found in this area, are indeed a pair of binghamii.
I also noticed that the female of Euthalia eriphylae eriphylae shown in D'Abrera,1983 is a female of binghamii.
In addition, a specimen was found in W.Thailand which is believed to be a true female of Euthalia eriphylae eriphylae.
Both binghamii and eriphylae are found sympatrically from C. Myanmar to W.Thailand, which may have caused the confusion.
In any case, the relationship between mahadeva and eriphylae needs further study, including DNA analysis.
