The butterfly is uncommon in montane forests at low to moderate elevations (Alt. 150 - 650m).
Inoué & Kawazoé (1967) described this taxon as a subspecies of Isma dawna.
Subsequently, Eliot (1973:13) treated both Isma dawna minuscla and Isma umbrosa contracta as synonyms of umbrosa, and he chose minuscla for the subspecies name of Vietnamese umbrosa.
The markings of the populations from Laos and Vietnam appear to be rather variable and I agree with Eliot's treatment that both taxa are conspecific.
However, the shape of the valva is rather different in umbrosa from peninsular Thailand.
Further taxonomic study is needed.
